The Volkswagen Story: Volkswagen has an impressive lineup of cars, which includes gas- and diesel-powered sedans, wagons, hatchbacks and a reborn New Beetle. Volkswagen of America is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG and was founded in 1955 — six years after Volkswagen's popular Beetle showed up on this side of the Atlantic. Today, Volkswagen of America is the top-selling European automobile importer in the U.S. German parent Volkswagen AG also owns Audi, Bentley Motors and Bugatti, among others. The company also recently announced plans to merge with Porsche.
